Published Sun 24 Jul 2022
The 2022 Commonwealth Games are just around the corner and with several Victorian stars in Australia’s 14 player line-up heading to Birmingham, there’s going to be plenty to cheer about when the Aussie team hits the tables.
Loops future star Finn Luu is yet another Victorian who will be making his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham this year after some phenomenal state, national and international performances over the last few years of his stellar young career.
Finn started playing at the age of 6 with his older brother Skyy, his family and in particular his dad who played social table tennis encouraged him to take up the sport. Finn quickly began learning from current National Assistant Coach Simon Gerada and his father Joe at the Loops Table Tennis Club. Since then he has represented Team Vic more than 10 times and has pulled on the green and gold plenty during his junior and young senior career.
“Since starting out I have travelled to more countries and states than I can count, to train and compete. I’ve met many great coaches and mentors and great players and have learnt many lessons along the way,” Said Finn.
“My coach Simon and John and my parents have been great influences on me, always leading by example and nudging me in the right direction. There’s been many other coaches and mentors along my journey, and they have all been positive influences too.” He added
Most recently Finn put in a brilliant showing at the 2022 Table Tennis Australia National Championships in Queensland. He came away with six medals including a bronze in the men’s teams, three gold in the doubles and mixed doubles, U/21 singles silver, U/19 singles gold and the Best Player Award for the Under 19 Boy’s.
Finn’s first international successes came when he combined with Lee Yonghun and fellow Commonwealth Games debutant Nicholas Lum to win the junior boys’ team title at the 2019 Oceania Junior and Cadets Championships in Tonga, then combining with Lum just days later to win both the cadets and junior boys doubles titles.
While he has already achieved a staggering amount for someone so young all of us at TTV are positive that his Commonwealth Games debut is just the beginning for plenty of bigger and better things in the future.
