The 2022 Table Tennis Australia National Championships officially wrapped on Sunday July 10 with the juniors completing their singles finals. It had been a fantastic week for the Team Vic juniors who brought home 45 medals including 18 gold from the Teams, Doubles and Singles events across five age groups.
Team Vic’s juniors also won half of the Best Player awards for the week with Finn Luu (Under 19), Nicholas Lum (Under 17), Connie Psihogios (Under 17 & 15) and Alice Xia (Under 11) all finishing atop their age groups. Capping off an outstanding week, Nicholas Lum was also awarded Michael Szabados Award for the Australian Junior Player of the Year.
The week started off brilliantly as our team of 100+ juniors managed to claim seven medals in the Teams event including three gold, two silver and two bronze. The Under 11 Boy’s side of Jaden Deng, Joshua Ding, Brian Levi Teslar and Omar Thabet put in our first gold medal performance.
Kavyaa Madaan, Swetha Sundaresan, Alice Xia and Serena Zhang followed up by fighting hard to win the bronze medal in the Under 13 Girl’s group, whilst the Under 15 Boys’ team of Youseff Hassan, Zhongye Alex Huang, Justin Kwan and Daniel Noura put in an admirable battle to come away with silver in the final, keeping our great streak of medalling in every age group and class of Teams going.
Yi-Jen Hsu, Gabby Osvath and Victoria Zhang added our second silver medal in the Under 17 Girl’s category with the Under 17 Boy’s quartet of Colin Chen, Ahmed Hassan, Yik Hei Jerry Mak and Aviraj Singh winning the bronze medal.
Richard Li, Lucas Lum, Winuk Rathnasinghe and Aditya Sareen topped the field to bring home a gold in the Under 19 Boy’s and were backed up by a great gold medal performance in the Under 19 Girl’s with our trio of future stars, Sanaya Buddhadasa, Cherry Le and Connie Psihogios playing excellently to win their final.
The Doubles and Mixed Doubles events were up next and the Team Vic junior team put on a dominant display of teamwork and outstanding doubles play to take a huge haul of 26 medals with 10 gold, 9 silver and 7 bronze going Victoria’s way after all finals had been played.
When the final day of the Championships rolled around the junior team had already contributed a massive 33 medals to Victoria’s tally including 7 gold. They weren’t quite done yet as our future stars added 5 additional gold medals alongside 5 silver and 2 bronze to bring the juniors medal total to 45!
Kavyaa Madaan was our sole medal winner in the Under 11’s with a great silver medal performance in the Girl’s singles.
Connie Psihogios, Cherry Le and Victoria Zhang were in sizzling form as the trio took every spot on the podium in the Under 15 Girl’s Singles, whilst Aditya Sareen added to his brilliant week with a gold in the Under 15 Boy’s Singles.
Connie struck gold for a second time with her winning performance in the Under 17 Girl’s Singles defeating South Australia’s Hanna Goh in the final with Sanaya Buddhadasa claiming the bronze.
Nicholas Lum who is never too far away from the top step of a podium took out the Under 17 Boy’s Singles beating fellow Vic Aditya Sareen in the final match.
In the Under 19 Boy’s Singles, it was Finn Luu taking the top step this time with a fantastic match against teammate Nicholas Lum and rounding out our medals was Sanaya Buddhadasa adding another silver to her carry on just for good measure.
“The juniors of Team Vic were outstanding all week, from experienced campaigners and older players to the new players representing the blue and teal for the first time, the level of play was phenomenal and the support each one of these kids gave to each other was fantastic.” Said Team Vic Manager Claire Montgomery.
TTV and the Victorian table tennis community can be immensely proud of the job our juniors did in Queensland. We can’t wait to see them back it up again in 2023!
