Orford & District Table Tennis Association completed their first week of the season, read below for the report on all the action.
ORFORD & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION
The opening night of the Orford & District Table Tennis came in cold, a sign of a long chilly winter ahead Nightowl feels from the winds and icicles in the tree.
Warrnambool Warriors started the year off as they left off in the 2020 shortened season, winning. The other two matches played kept all players on their toes, with long games and rubbers, keeping them warm.
Week 3
Myndarra v Attunga
Attunga will be too strong for the Myndarra youngsters.
Orford v Tarrone
The Secretary’s Tarrone team will have the wood on President’s Orford team unless Orford pull a player out of the hat.
Pt Fairy v Warrnambool Warriors
Nightowl can’t see Pt Fairy denting Warrnambool Warriors winning run.
Glengleeson – bye
Results Week 1
Orford defeated Glengleeson 7.23.392/4.21.383
You don’t often see such close points when the rubber/games are so far apart.
Orford managed to take the four points by winning the two doubles rubbers.
Glengleeson Tony Storer won his three rubbers, two of them in four games. Andrea Drendel and David Rowbottom were Orford’s best winning two rubbers each, both endured a four and five game rubber in their set. Jayden Clapp won his first rubber in competition against Lindsay Morton 11.9, 11.9, 8.11 & 11.8.
Pt Fairy were defeated by Attunga 5.21386/6.22.402
After two of their players standing down in the week leading to the opening round Pt Fairy found a couple of able players to join Domonic Angarano. Coming up against a strong Attunga combination was a test which they should be happy with their performance.
Eight of the eleven rubbers were extended while several rubbers went past the 11 points.
Dom won his three rubbers for the night, two against Ian Wortley the other against Val Wortley extended to the fourth game. Pt Fairy were unable to clinch a doubles rubber leaving Attunga the nights winner. Kelly Wortley was Attunga’s best winning two rubbers.
Unlucky player of the night was ports Matthew Dwyer who lost two rubbers in five games and the third in four games.
Hopefully, Pt Fairy’s good showing is the tonic Ray Young needs for his recovery.
Warrnambool Warriors defeated Tarrone 8.27/3.13
Thank goodness David Warhurst plays for Tarrone!
David won his three rubbers against some strong competition. In the first singles round he defeated David Cranwell in a four-game rubber, but it was his victory over Peter Owen in the last singles set after both players also playing in both doubles. This marathon went David’s way 12/10, 4/11, 11/6, 2/11 & 12/10
Both doubles were long rubbers also with Warriors Neil Ford/Peter Owen defeating Andrew McGrath/David in four games while in the second doubles Peter/David Cranwell won the close encounter with Steven Young/David 12/10, 11/8, 7/11, 9/11 & 11/7.
All the Warrnambool Warriors won two rubbers in this opening night.
Bye – Myndarra.
