Results Across Victoria - Orford Week 2

Published Mon 06 Jul 2020

At Table Tennis Victoria we love hearing stories and seeing results from all over the state, so we have decided to start a bit of a weekly round up of results and stories that our wonderful members and affiliates have sent in.

We understand that Covid-19 restrictions have negatively affected the ability for Clubs and Associations to return to play but if you or your club would like any stories or results published through TTV please send an email to mmo@tabletennisvic.org.au.

The following piece is an update on how week two down at Orford & District TTA unfolded.

ORFORD & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION

Attunga will fight with Warrnambool Warriors for top spot over the next week’s, percentage being the dividing factor.  Warrnambool Warriors winning margins in the first two weeks have opened a commanding percentage gap over Attunga.  If Attunga wants the top spot, they must keep winning.  These two teams don’t meet until the final week of round one and both could be still undefeated.

A busy night at the Orford Hall finds three home teams doing battle, two of the matches between co-tenants.

With high game scores in two matches this week, four teams should have slept well through the nights rain.  How they moved the next day after such a long hiatus would have been the big question.  Nightowl wonders how much deep heat was needed for tight muscles!

Week 3

Myndarra v Attunga

Aaron Rowbottom will win his three rubbers, but Attunga’s players are too strong for the youngsters of Myndarra.

With no doubles to help with the scoreline Attunga 6/3 will make the trip back to Warrnambool an enjoyable one.

Orford v Tarrone

The President & Secretary face off with this match on their home turf at the Orford Hall.  Tarrone’s David Warhurst should win his three rubbers.  David Rowbottom, Orford winning maybe their only two rubbers for the night.  Andrew McGrath and Steve Young picking up the remaining rubbers for Tarrone.

Pt Fairy v Warrnambool Warriors

Co-tenants of the Warrnambool Table Tennis Stadium meet for the first time.

Just how will Pt Fairy’s Anthony Ciconte, Bob Shanahan and Barry Stewart all ex-players from other associations now living at Pt Fairy, up against last year’s runner’s up in the Warriors?  Peter Owen and David Cranwell have only missed this year enforced stand-down, while Neil Ford is still finding his legs like the port players.

Nightowl feels that the Warriors just might have enough fire power against the rusty Pt Fairy players though Anthony Ciconte should win his three rubbers unless Peter Owen brings his A game, their rubber the highlight of the night.

Glengleeson v Broadwater

The Drendel family Broadwater team will be too strong for Glengleeson in the second match of co-tenants for the week.

Results Week 2

Glengleeson defeated Myndarra 5.15/4.12

The deciding rubber of this match was Glengleeson’s Lindsay Morten winning against Nick Bartlett Myndarra in three games, the last 12/10.  Aaron Rowbottom, Myndarra won his three rubbers while Ally Rowbottom contributed a rubber.  Both Tony Storer and Gareth Spring won two rubbers each for Glengleeson.

Attunga defeated Orford 5.17/4.10

Val Wortley, Attunga lead by winning her three rubbers, her only challenge for the night David Rowbottom extending their match to four games.  David won his second rubber for the night when he defeated Kelly Wortley 12/10, 4/11, 11/6, 9/11 & 11/6.

Dom Angarano won two rubbers for Orford, while both Kelly and Pat Dwyer won a rubber each for Attunga

Broadwater lost to Warrnambool Warriors 8.25/1.6

The first game of the night set the tone for this match, don’t think that by looking at the outcome it was a one-sided night.  Five rubbers went into the fourth game while the longest game 16/14 the nights first.

Warriors Neil Ford defeated Andrea Drendel, Broadwater 16/14, 12/10 & 11/3.  The next two rubbers went into the fourth game, Warriors Peter Owen and David Cranwell with their noses in front.

David, Andrea rubber saw a four gamer with David winning 11/5, 4/11, 15/13 & 12/10.

Peter Drendel, Broadwater took revenge with a 13/11, 7/11, 11/8 & 11/7 win over David for their rubber of the night, while Neil won a tough battle against Leah Drendel, Broadwater 11/5, 15/13 & 12/10.  Peter Own winning his three rubbers.

Tarrone defeated Pt Fairy 5.21/4.16

Pt Fairy were without Anthony Ciconte this week, his availability might be critical to their ability to win.

Tarrone’s David Warhurst won three rubbers comfortably, while he was supported by Andrew McGrath and Steve Young winning a rubber each, both players featuring in the six extended rubbers of the night.

Steve opened the night defeating Pt Fairy’s Barry Stewart in a long five game rubber finally winning 11/4, 20/18, 8/11, 13/15 & 11/9.  Steve lost to Pt Fairy’s Bill Lyons, in five games and Bob Shanahan in four games.

Andrew won his rubber over Barry 3/11, 6/11, 11/7, 11/2 & 11/7 while he lost to Bill in five and Bob winning 8/11, 12/14, 11/8, 11/8 & 13/11.

Bob and Bill won two rubbers each for Pt Fairy.
