The 2022 S-Trend Sportswear Victorian Open Championships concluded on Sunday after back-to-back weekends of fantastic table tennis at MSAC.

Six-time Olympian Jian Fang Lay (Albert Park) took home the Open Women’s Singles title after some fantastic matches. Lay cleared her group stage without dropping a set but had to work hard for a comeback victory against Dandenong’s Qian Yang after going down three sets to one in their semi-final. The pair put on a fantastic seven set match for onlookers that included a 4th set that went to 20. Lay fought back to win the last three sets before going on to defeat Dandenong’s Li Na Lei in a five-set final.

Dandenong’s Ma Lin claimed the Open Men’s Singles title continuing his blistering form that saw him take out the Ballarat Open earlier this month.

His tournament started off well as he cruised to three straight sets victories in the group stage, before winning a further three matches without dropping a set to make the final. Croydon’s Aditya Sareen managed to grab the third set from Lin in the decider but ultimately went down 4-1 to the eventual champion.

Croydon’s Sanish Ambekar and TTV’s own Yugandh Zende (Croydon) won the Open Men’s Doubles while Coburg’s Chrysela Gracias and Dandenong’s Ellen Walker took home the Open Women’s Doubles, Walker’s 3rd doubles title of the weekend.

Rory Carroll (Ballarat) defeated Coburg’s Trevor Hirth to win the Para Singles State Title while also claiming the Para Doubles with Geelong’s Simon Baxter.

“The juniors in particular should pat themselves on the back for their turnout, 136 junior entries are more than I can recall at any Vic Open ever and it’s great to see so many kids from all over Victoria enjoying tournament table tennis.” She said.
