The 2022 Dandenong Open Championships wrapped up this past weekend with the Veterans Open coming to an end. The weekend prior saw the seniors hit the tables whilst record numbers in the junior tournament caused the event to be split across two days.
"While everyone was enthralled with the Commonwealth Games and watching our Australian team perform better than ever it was fantastic to see Dandenong put on such a great tournament," Said TTV ECO Claire Montgomery.
"A special mention has to go out to all of the junior players who entered and turned up, with an unbelievable 140 junior entrant's, tournament directors had to alter the schedule just to fit in the matches, it was certainly a good problem to have and it's wonderful to see so many Victorian juniors enjoying tournament table tennis." She added
In the Senior Open, Croydon’s Sajith Silva won both of his group matches before making his way through the finals while only dropping a couple of sets. He came up against fellow Croydon player Yugandh Zende and after going down two sets to one early fought back to take out the championship.
For the women’s, Dandenong young star Connie Psihogios won all four of her matches including three straight sets victories to claim the title in her home centre. Danica Alburo finished in second place. Connie also held a 5-0 record in the U19/21 Women’s Singles to add a second senior title to her haul for the weekend.
Albury’s Max Geering defeated Charlie Hollow (Mornington Frankston) in four sets in the U21 Men’s Singles. Bradley Patton took out the Twenties title whilst the O/30 Men’s went to Partha Gogoi.
In the junior ranks, Coburg’s Yousef Hassan and Croydon’s Justin Kwan battled it out in the final of the U/19 and U/17 Boy’s Singles with Hassan taking 3-0 and 3-1 wins respectively to add a pair of titles to his results.
Connie Psihogios kept her hot form going into the juniors, winning the U/17 Girl’s Singles to go with her pair of senior titles from the weekend.
Victoria Zhang and Alex Huang won the U/15 categories, Joshua Ding and Alice Xia took home the U/13 titles, Aiden You and Maggie Lyu were victorious in the U/11’s and Samarth Singh and Ariel Li won the U/9’s.
The following weekend saw the Veterans head to Dandenong where Craig Carter (Coburg) once again won the O/30 Men’s Singles. He took the win in a five-set match against Traralgon’s Mick Warr. Albert Park’s Lydia Liu won the Women’s O/30’s.
The O/40’s titles went to Croydon’s Han Ping and Aviva Bradley. Croydon players were having a day out in the Vets with Croydon pair Belinda Strong and Scott Huang each taking home an O/50’s title as well.
St Kilda Cricket’s Brian Berry broke the string of Croydon victories with his win in the O/60 Men’s Singles whilst Geelong’s Vicki Carruthers won the Women’s.
