ORFORD & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION
At the association grand final on Wednesday night played at the Orford Hall, Nightowl learnt that you can he hypnotised by a table tennis game or a new way of curing insomnia!
Just watch the table tennis white ball travel back and forth over the net 20-40 times, beats counting sheep!
The Wortley families Attunga team not only won the A Grade grand final but are also Champions remaining undefeated for the season.
Tarrone comfortably won the B Grade final against Broadwater.
Both teams took advantage of “win the doubles win the match”. Though Attunga had a harder struggle to win both of their doubles.
A Grade
Attunga defeated Warrnambool Warriors!
Though the Warrnambool Warriors struggled throughout the year for a third player after the injury before the season started to Barry Stewart, they finally found the player they were after in Peter Drendell who just qualified in time!
It was a hard-fought match with both the teams pushing each other to their limits with lots of long rallies and flashy shots and finally being decided when Ian Wortley defeated Peter Drendell (11/7, 12/10 & 13/11) in a nail biter tenth rubber. As with all the previous games, long rallies were a feature of this encounter, Peter using patience and concentration to stay in the game, but Ian had the last laugh with his extra years of experience coming to his rescue.
The pair from Warriors, Peter Drendell/Pete Owen went into the first doubles match 2/1 up, when they were two-all and 10/8 up it was looking like a win to them but look out for the girls! Val & Kelly Wortley don’t give up! They levelled the score at 10/10, Kelly rolling a shot over the net, 11/10 then snicking the table edge for a win, 4/11, 11/4, 11/9, 8/11 & 12/10 (46/45 points).
Scores level 2/2
Val and Peter then played the next singles, a long hard-fought rubber on them both with rallies going as long as 10-15+ shots. Val was in her best touch without making much mistakes and giving Peter an opportunity to capitalise. Peter finally winning (11/8, 5/11, 7/11, 11/7 & 13/11) the rubber with Val stealing some valuable points making it 48/47.
Going into the second doubles Attunga were 4/3 up thanks to an upset win by Kelly over Peter Owen (10/12, 11/7, 11/6 & 11/8).
Val and Ian played Pete Owen/David Cranwell in a rubber equally as long as the previous doubles. (Word that the hall has a defribulator was well received, Nightowl isn’t sure whether it was meant for the players or spectators)
The Warriors pair had to concentrate on returning shots while waiting for the opportunity to “put one away” which didn’t always go as planned.
Attunga won (12/10, 8/11, 11/8, 6/11 & 11/5) (48/45 pts).
Attunga 5/3
Peter Owen defeated Val in a three-game rubber to keep Warriors in the match, but Ian countered by defeating Peter Drendel to win the night.
Both Warriors Peters won two rubbers while Ian was Attunga’s best with two rubbers.
Final Score: 6.20.344/4.17.331
B Grade
Tarrone defeated Broadwater!
At the other end of the hall, the B Grade final was a much more sedate night, only two of the rubbers were extended and the highest score was 12/10.
Tarrone’s David Warhurst/Andrew McGrath won the first doubles rubber defeating Tony Storer/Gareth Spring (11/3, 11/7, 3/11 & 12/10).
Gareth also played the other long rubber of the night when he defeated Andrew (8/11, 11/7, 11/3 & 11/5).
David Warhurst Tarrone won his three rubbers and was ably supported by Andrew McGrath with a rubber. David teamed with Steve Young to win the second doubles which put Tarrone 5/3 needing only to win a rubber going into the final singles series.
Both Tony Storer and Gareth Spring won two rubbers each for Broadwater.
Final Score: 6.19.290/4.13.267
Congratulations for both winning teams.
