Officiating Excellence Table Tennis Victoria Umpires League

Published Wed 20 Nov 2024

The Table Tennis Victoria Umpires League (TTVUL) had a remarkable 2024, with its dedicated officials achieving new heights and cementing their reputation as leaders in the sport. This year saw a record number of umpires step up, demonstrating commitment, passion, and a love for the game that’s inspiring for players and fans alike.

A Cohort to Celebrate

“We’re incredibly proud of this year’s cohort,” says Kameron Chan, TTVUL Training Coordinator. “Several officials have taken the next big step in their careers, enhancing Victoria’s ranks with fresh National Umpires and progressing towards international goals.

“Shahram Aminzadeh and Bruce Doughty, for instance, are on the path to becoming fully accredited Blue Badge umpires, while many others are on their way to sit the International Umpires exam in 2026. Having trained each of the candidates this year, their achievements don’t just reflect their own hard work but also bolster the strength and reputation of officiating in Victoria.”

Kameron also acknowledged the teamwork that drives this success: “Special thanks to Gary Warnest, State Umpire Course Convenor, whose tireless dedication to mentoring prospective State Umpires ensures they come to the National Umpire course ready to thrive. Together, we’re planning an exciting series of training opportunities in 2025, including two State Umpire courses—one in Bendigo and one at MSAC—and a State Referee course in January.”

Shining Stars of 2024

Shahram Aminzadeh: Olympic Ambitions

What began as a hobby has become Shahram’s mission. Having passed the Advanced Rules Exam and completed Advanced Umpire Training, Shahram is edging closer to Blue Badge status. His dream? To officiate at the Olympics. Along the way, he’s inspiring others to embrace officiating as a way to connect deeply with the game and contribute to the sport's growth.

Anna Wright: Championing Women in Officiating

Anna’s progression to National Umpire reflects her drive to inspire and mentor others, especially women. With aspirations to officiate internationally and help junior players thrive, Anna embodies the supportive, inclusive spirit of the TTV Umpires League.

Ken Mathieson: Aiming High

Ken’s rise to National Umpire is fuelled by his admiration for Australia’s international officiating elite. He relishes the chance to watch players improve under his watch, knowing his role as an umpire contributes to their success.

Stewart Gin: Retirement with a Purpose

As he transitions into retirement, Stewart has found a new passion in officiating. After his promotion to National Umpire, Stewart set his sights on international qualifications, including the prestigious Blue Badge. His first international experience at the Oceanic Junior Championships this year confirmed his love for the thrill and challenge of officiating.

Bruce Doughty: A Blue Badge in Progress

Bruce’s 2024 milestone of becoming a Blue Badge in Progress (BBiP) has energized his ambitions to officiate at ITTF tournaments. For Bruce, officiating is about more than rules; it’s about contributing to the game he loves and building connections that last a lifetime.

Frank Riha & Adam Pegg: National Achievements

Frank and Adam’s elevation to National Umpire status adds to Victoria’s depth of talent and ensures the future of officiating remains bright.

Why Officiating Matters

Officiating is more than enforcing rules; it’s about being part of the action, forging connections, and supporting the growth of the sport. “As Anna, Bruce, and others have shown, officiating is a rewarding journey,” Kameron explains. “Whether you’re just learning the rules or aiming for the Olympic stage, you become part of a family—a community of like-minded people who often become lifelong friends.”
