Published Fri 03 Apr 2020

In this edition of Table Tennis Victoria’s ‘Meet the Vic’s’ we spoke to Croydon’s Sajith Silva who is a member of the Victorian Men’s C team.

Sajith was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Melbourne in 2015, prior to the move he had been playing table tennis for more than 18 years.

“I played several international tournaments including South Asian and Asian, representing Sri Lanka on both Junior and Senior National levels,” said Sajith.

“After moving to Melbourne, I have been playing in several tournaments as a member of the Croydon and Districts Table Tennis Association and TTV. Since joining the club, I was able to win several competitions too.”

Silva won the Victorian Closed Open Men’s Singles in 2019 as well as the Bendigo Senior Open in 2018. Before moving to Australia, he had some brilliant success in Sri Lanka.

“I was a two-time Junior National Champion in Sri Lanka. I finished second at the 2003 Junior South Asian Games in Bangladesh, the 2004 Junior South Asian Games and 2005 Junior South Asian Games in India. I also took home a silver and bronze medal at the 2010 11th South Asian Games.” Said Silva.

Silva’s start in the sport came after he was encouraged to play something, and table tennis was one of the famous sports at his school.

“After being selected to play, I was interested in table tennis and won several school, district, national and international level competitions,” he said.

“I believe my dedication makes me train hard and win tournaments both on national and international levels.”

Silva says that his past competitions and experiences along the way have helped him become a better player.

“I have been able to play with different people in different countries, I have learnt from them and also, I was able to learn through my mistakes and losses,” he explained.

“I was encouraged and appreciated by the state of Victoria as they identified my talent and have given me the opportunity to participate in the tournaments.”

We absolutely love the dedication and passion Sajith shows to our great sport and we are looking forward to watching him represent our state at Nationals in the future!
