Meet the Vic's - Matthew Glanville

Published Wed 18 Mar 2020

We understand that this is a very tough time for many people, and that Table Tennis Victoria's members are not able to enjoy the sport to the fullest at the moment. Because of this we will be trying our best to get out lots of content over the next few weeks and months and hopefully get everyone their table tennis fix!

We have had a chat to a few of our Victorian State Team players about how they started in the sport, some of their achievements, their goals for 2020 and more.

Sunbury’s Matthew Glanville will be representing Victoria for the first time in 2020 when he heads to Brisbane as part of the under 21 C team taking on the National Championships (Currently postponed). He’ll be teamed up with Geelong’s Calden Lyons.

Matthew began playing at 12 years old for the Sunbury Table Tennis Club and started taking the sport seriously a few years later. Fast forward eight years and he is continuously improving and has a few decent results under his belt as well.

“My biggest and most satisfying achievement in table tennis is probably winning the Victorian Country Championship team shield last year for my home club, Sunbury,” Said Matthew.

“My main goal for 2020 is to just play more consistent table tennis, to compete and to beat some higher-level players.”

As his talent grows so does his love of the game and his desire to keep working hard.

“I love playing table tennis as it’s a sport that has so many different skills involved, which is challenging but definitely much more rewarding.” He said.

Matt highlights his relationship with his coach, Brian Berry, as the reason he loves the game so much.

“I would credit my coach Brian Berry as the main reason for my enjoyment of playing table tennis,” he said.

“While he has made me a much better player, he has also supported and encouraged me during the frustrating times of playing the sport.”

Everyone at TTV hopes Matt and Calden can bring home a national title in 2020.
