In the Spotlight - Terry Caldwell and AWTTA

Published Wed 06 Nov 2024

In the heart of Albury-Wodonga, Terry Caldwell found his post-retirement calling in table tennis. What started as a casual invite from a friend turned into a vital role as President of the Albury-Wodonga Table Tennis Association, where Caldwell now fosters a community through sport, camaraderie, and competitive spirit.

Reflecting on his start, Caldwell said, "A friend kept inviting me to ‘Keenagers,’ but I was off sailing. Then, I surprised him by turning up a year later—and three years in, I found myself president. It’s become more than a hobby; it’s a community.”

A Commitment to Community

Caldwell’s dedication is rooted in the club’s supportive atmosphere. “Our club is more than just a place to play; it’s where people come together,” he said. "Encouraging players, bringing in coaches like Sam Palmer, and seeing young talent grow keeps me motivated. I even play competitively myself—it’s just that fun and rewarding.

Leading Albury-Wodonga TTA

As president, Caldwell balances multiple roles: from organising the popular Keenagers tournaments to overseeing facility upgrades. "I ensure things are running smoothly, and our facilities meet the needs of our members and visiting players,” he shared. “We recently upgraded from 8 to 14 courts and installed new lighting and flooring. The difference is night and day.”

Inspiring Growth Through Local Engagement

With a passion for encouraging newcomers, Caldwell invites everyone to join the game. “We’re always looking for fresh faces,” he noted. “We have local school groups, corporate evenings, and even special events with Rotary and the Lions Club. Some people come out just for fun, but quite a few stick around.”

Facing Challenges and Looking Ahead

Caldwell acknowledges that attracting young players to the sport is a common challenge. “Getting kids involved consistently isn’t easy, but we keep adapting. We’re finding new ways to show them how exciting table tennis can be,” he said.

Looking to the future, Caldwell has ambitious plans for the club’s development. "We’re working with Albury City Council to improve our clubhouse. Eventually, we hope to add more courts, taking us to 16 play tables and two practice tables. We’ve got the land, and with the right funding, we’ll get there.”

A Lifelong Dedication to Sport

Beyond table tennis, Caldwell is deeply involved in other sports. “I’ve always enjoyed seeing people compete and connect,” he said. “I love being part of that, whether it’s through table tennis, AFL school sport, or sailing.”

Caldwell’s commitment to Albury-Wodonga TTA is a testament to the power of community and the joy of shared sport. With his steady leadership, the club is well on its way to a bright and exciting future.

TTV commends Terry for his consistent effort and is very excited for AWTTA to be hosting the upcoming Veterans Open from November 23-24!
