Fast Five with Board Director Dan Hamer

Published Wed 17 Nov 2021

The last 12 months have seen a lot of changes to the TTV board with five new directors joining since 2020. We thought it would be a great time to take a moment and get to know some of our more recent TTV Board members a little better with five fast questions.

Recently we spoke to Dan Hamer to learn a bit more about him, his background, and goals for his time at TTV.

1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

“I’m a passionate sports administrator specialising in commercial operations, strategy and partnerships, with a sprinkling of marketing to bring it all together. Collaborating with partners to help achieve their organisational objectives is one of the more enjoyable parts of my day to day, given the incredibly dynamic nature of sports marketing.

“Outside of my commitments to TTV, I work for the Hawthorn Football Club, which was certainly an initial shock to my dad who raised my brother and I as Essendon supporters.

“I live with my partner Rachael and our dog Gracie, who I’m convinced is the catalyst for all of Melbourne’s lockdowns as she reaps the benefits of staying home with Rach and I all day.”

2. What brought you to TTV?

“One of my mentors actually came across the position description and shared it with me. To have the chance to bring my skillset to TTV and help drive organisational change (alongside my fellow directors and the broader TTV administration) is a brilliant opportunity.

“Although my table tennis skills leave a lot to be desired, I’m also a big fan of the sport at all levels: whether it’s playing in a friend’s garage for hours on end or watching Jian Fang Lay during the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year - you can’t help being mesmerised as a player or a spectator.”

3. What are your goals for TTV?

“Fundamentally my goals are to help drive the strategic priorities of TTV: building our profile in Victoria, growing participation at all levels and ensuring our high-performance frameworks are accessible, practical and effective.

“I’m very much looking forward to collaborating with our new CEO on innovative commercial initiatives that will help grow short and long-term revenue for TTV.”

4. What do you find rewarding and challenging about serving on the board of an SSO?

“Being able to help drive the strategic direction of not only an Olympic & Commonwealth Games sport, but a sport that is wonderfully accessible at all levels is exceptionally rewarding.

“There will always be challenges, however I’m incredibly confident in our board and wider administration in navigating each and every one of them. Although I’ve been with the organisation for a short amount of time, I am thoroughly impressed with the professionalism, tenacity and passion displayed by everyone at TTV.”

5. What would you say to the TTV members during this time?

“I’m incredibly excited to launch into 2022 with clubs getting back into uninterrupted competition again, and I’m looking forward to meeting as many people as possible who are involved with our sport. Please feel free to get in touch at any time.

“Lastly, I would like to reiterate that as a board we’ll be tenacious, innovative and collaborative in our pursuit of strategic and operational success for TTV.”
