Event Recap - 2021 Geelong Open
Published Wed 26 May 2021
The 2021 edition of the Geelong Open took place last weekend at the Geelong Table Tennis Centre with Croydon’s Luke Cosgriff and Loops’ Sanaya Buddhadasa winning the Open Men’s and Women’s titles across a great weekend of table tennis.
Cosgriff put on an excellent display throughout his group matches as he advanced to the next stage with a 3-0 record. He did not drop a set in the final bracket eventually going on to defeat fellow Croydon player Sajith Silva in a straight-set final. He also became the inaugural winner of the brand-new Twenties category with a straight-set victory over Alex Tran (Coburg).
Buddhadasa cruised through her group stage games without dropping a set and went through to defeat Loops’ Cherry Le and Olivia Green in her two final matches to claim the title. A very impressive showing by all the Loops girls. Sanaya also won the U/19 Girl’s Singles.
Sunraysia’s Matt Avers and Loops’ Chermaine Quah won the U/21 Men’s and Women’s titles, respectively. Geelong’s own Junior star Richard Li claimed the U/19’s Boy’s championship with a very impressive undefeated display. Li also added the U/17 title to his haul from the weekend. And while Olivia Green may have come up just short of the Open title she still went home with a solid win in the U/17 Girl’s singles.
For the Veterans on Sunday, it was great to see so many familiar faces battling it out after scheduling changes have seen us go almost two months without a Vets tournament.
Coburg’s star Craig Carter was on the winners list again after claiming another O/30 Men’s Singles title. Carter defeated Tarneit’s Reddy Tatikonda who has been another dominant player in the O/30’s this year.
Adam Fu (Croydon) won the O/40 Men’s Singles ahead of Warrnambool stalwart Simon Johnson in a four-set final. Knox Indoor’s Huijuan Teng played some fantastic table tennis to win the O/30 & 40 Women’s Singles as well as the O/50’s Women’s title.
Overall, the 2021 Geelong Open was a great success congratulations to the Geelong TTA and tournament organisers on running a wonderful tournament.
Up next on the TTV tournament calendar is the 70th Anniversary of the Victorian Country Championships set to take place at MSAC over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, June 12-14. The Victorian Metro Championships will be on at Croydon over the same weekend. Followed by the Ballarat Veterans Championships on June 27th while the Junior, Senior, Youth & Para Teams begin preparing to head off for the Nationals from July 2-11.
