Event Recap - 2021 Croydon Masters Veterans O/30-50's

Published Mon 15 Mar 2021

The final veterans events of the 2021 Croydon Masters Veterans Open were held on Sunday with the O/30, O/40 and O/50 titles being decided.

Tarneit’s Reddy Rohit Tatikonda came into the Men’s O/30’s as the third seed and defeated Warrnambool Vets star Simon Johnson in a three-set final. Tatikonda made the final following an undefeated group stage and an impressive run that also included a win against second seeded Craig Carter (Coburg).

Knox Indoor’s Vivienne Halocha claimed the O/30 Women’s title going 3-0 and only losing two sets across her three matches. Albert Park’s Lydia Liu finished second. Both Tatikonda and Halocha also won the O/30’s events at last weeks Senior Masters Open.

In the O/40’s Men’s event, number five seed Harrison Huang (Yarra) took out the title with a straight sets victory over Croydon’s Scott Huang. Harrison finished his group stage with just the one loss and made it to the final comfortably, only being pushed to five sets once.

Lan Zhai (Croydon) took home a pair of titles with wins in the O/40 and O/50 Women’s events. She won all three of her O/40’s group stage matches in straight sets and continued that form on her way to both titles, not dropping a single set in either category all day.

Croydon’s Scott Huang found redemption following his second-place finish in the O/40’s with a five-set wins in the Men’s O/50’s final against fellow Croydon player Phillip Boyle. Huang had not lost a set up until his five-set semi-final win before moving on and taking the title.

“We were able to see some more fantastic table tennis at Croydon on Sunday to finish off the 2021 Masters Open and it was great to see a good turn out by our Vets players,” Said TTV ECO, Claire Montgomery.

“We can’t wait to see some more great veterans events in April at the Vic Open Vets Championships! We weren’t able to hold our state championships last year, so it is something I’m sure all the players are looking forward to as much as we are.”
