Published Fri 11 Feb 2022
We could not be more excited to see tournament table tennis return in 2022 with the Geelong Open Championships kicking us off this weekend at the Geelong Table Tennis Centre Feb 12-13.
The Juniors and Seniors will hit the tables first on Saturday with plenty of talent making the trip to Geelong to ensure a brilliant tournament. Two of last years most dominant players are returning with Sanish Ambekar and Yangzi Liu looking to add more titles to their impressive 2021 results.
Aussie youth duo Nic Lum and Finn Luu are also amongst the top five seeds for the tournament, and we can expect to see some exciting play from the pair of rising stars in the Open Men’s and U/21’s.
Connie Psihogios, Lucas Lum, Cherry Le, Leo Tran and a number of other great young players will be battling it out for the junior titles with a record number of junior entries at this year’s event.

On Sunday the Veterans will take over the centre with plenty of players from last years’ top ranked vets taking part. Simon Johnson enters as the top seed and will start his day with the O/40 Men’s Singles at 9am.
The likes of Craig Carter, Jeff Dever, Frank Riha, Igor Klaff, Vicki Carruthers, Belinda Strong, Jeanne Strong and plenty more will be sure to provide some great vets matches.

“It’s extremely exciting to see such great numbers for the first tournament on the TTV state calendar,” Said TTV’s Events & Clubs Officer Claire Montgomery.
“I think everyone is as keen as we are for a year of uninterrupted events and tournaments, and it’s really shown with the entries across all ages but especially the Juniors where we have a record number for this year’s Geelong Open.
“Hopefully it’s a sign for things to come in 2022 and we can have a great year for tournaments in Victoria, I think all of the players certainly deserve a year of great events and that’s what we’re hoping to provide!”
