Event Preview - 2021 Ballarat Open Championships
Published Wed 28 Apr 2021
The 2021 Ballarat Junior and Senior Open Championships hit the tables this weekend on May 1-2, at the Ballarat Table Tennis Centre in Wendouree. The event will be the final tournament of the 2021 State Team selection period for Junior, Youth, Senior and Para players.
Following three straight victories at the Dandenong Open, Croydon Masters and Vic Open in 2021, Balwyn United’s Sanish Ambekar is in fantastic form and will be looking to add a fourth open title to his haul from the year.
In the Open Women’s category, Yangzi Liu (NSW) will also be looking to make it four from four, after taking out the first three Open Women’s titles of the year. Liu defeated Lina Lei in straight sets in the final of the Vic Open and is one of the best females in the country at the moment. Currently sitting second in the National Senior Rankings and first in the U/21 and U/19 Girl’s rankings she is sure to do some damage in the Junior and Senior Championships on the weekend.
With the State Team selection period ending at the Ballarat Open you can be sure plenty of players looking to make it onto Team Vic for this year’s Nationals in Caloundra will be giving it their all on the weekend.
“We had some really fantastic numbers at the Vic Open Championships this year, especially by the Juniors. We’ve seen a pretty good number of entries come in for the Ballarat Junior Open as well so it should be another great tournament,” Said TTV ECO, Claire Montgomery.
“It’s also the last chance for players to earn points towards State Team selection so we can expect to see some great table tennis on both days.”
