Vic’s Heading to Birmingham – Team Vic Stalwart Dillon Chambers Ready to Make His Commonwealth Games Debut

Published Wed 20 Jul 2022

The 2022 Commonwealth Games are just around the corner and with several Victorian stars in Australia’s 14 player line-up heading to Birmingham, there’s going to be plenty to cheer about when the Aussie team hit the tables.

Croydon’s Dillon Chambers will be another Team Vic star who will be making his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham next week.

Dillon, who’s now 24, picked up a bat and began playing table tennis at two years old. He got his start by first sitting on the table before eventually standing on a small exercise trampoline to help him reach the edge. By the time he was a teenager he had earned himself the nickname “Kid Dynamite”.

“My journey has been in a few stages, initially playing in Mildura when I was 8, eventually I moved to Melbourne at 14 away from my family to get the required training.” said Dillon.

He moved to Germany in September 2020, playing in the Bundesliga to gain more top-flight competition, the move clearly worked as he finished 6th on the Australian rankings at the end of 2021 and earned himself the best national team selection of his career to date.

He’s represented Australia consistently since 2014 including appearances at two Junior World Championships (2014 & 15), as well as the 2019 Commonwealth Championships, and has been a part of the Team Vic squad at Nationals since 2012. In 2018 he won bronze in the U/21 Men’s Singles followed by a third-place finish in the Men’s Singles in 2019.

At this year’s Table Tennis Australia National Championships, he played himself into some good form with a trio of medals, a fantastic warm up before making the trip to Birmingham. In Caloundra, Dillon won a silver in the Men’s Singles and the Men’s Doubles as well as holding a 4-3 record in the Men’s Teams to help the Victorian ‘C’ side win bronze.

Dillon’s best achievements are still yet to come but between representing Victoria and pulling on the green and gold at the World Championships his impressive list of achievements only grows stronger with his impending Commonwealth Games debut.

Prior to his selection, Dillon said winning matches at the World Championships on the main court were amongst his favourite moments.

All of us at TTV are hoping Dillon adds to his top moments in Birmingham and everyone in the office along with the entire Australian and Victorian table tennis community will be right behind him as he does!
