Another weekend, another successful tournament!
The Greater Dandenong Junior/ Senior open took place last weekend at the Greater Dandenong Table Tennis Association July 29-30.
The Junior Boys kicked off proceedings on Saturday with some great results across the board.
In the Under 19 Boy’s Singles, it was down to the Hassan brothers to battle it out for bragging rights at home.
Yousef went home with the win, beating his brother in three straight sets, ensuring Ahmed would be doing his chores for the week!
In the Under 17 Boy’s Singles, it was Viet Anh Tran defeating Yousef Hassan 3-1.
Across some of the other categories, Arvin Yeung took out the Under 15 Boy’s Singles, Joshua Ding won the Under 13 Boy’s Singles and Samyukt Vinodhkumar took out the Under 11 Boy’s Singles.

Moving into Sunday, it was the Junior Girls and the Senior Open to finish the weekend.
In a tense battle in the Men’s Singles, Sajith Silva took on Jashan Antal with Antal taking the upper hand, leading 2-1, with Silva seemingly on the ropes.
But Silva stormed home to win the final three sets to take home the win, 4-2 in a scintillating display of table tennis.
In the Women’s Singles, there was only one player who did not lose a set on her quest to winning, being Connie Psihogios, defeating Ellen Walker in straight sets.
Psihogios would then go on to take out the Women’s doubles alongside Parleen Kaur however, she unfortunately went down to Ellen Walker and Zach Anstey in the Mixed Doubles, having paired up with her dad, Jim.
In the Under 19 Girl’s Singles, it was Esme Ho defeating Gabby Osvath in straight sets however, Osvath would go on to win the Under 17 Girl’s Singles and Women’s Singles Consolation.
Across some of the other results in the Junior Girls and Senior Open categories, Kavyaa Madaan took out the Under 15 and 13 Girl’s Singles, Ahmed Hassan won in the Under 21 Singles, Danilo Alburo winning the Over 30 Singles and Zach Anstey and Rhys Thomas took out the Men’s Doubles.

“The Dandenong senior and junior tournament was a great success over the weekend, the tournament was well attended, and the feedback was positive,” said Greater Dandenong Treasurer Greg Robbins.
“In the juniors’ event held Saturday, Sunshine’s Viet Anh Tran playing in his first TTV tournament, had victory over the defending boy’s champion, Yousef Hassan (-5, 5, 5, 12). The following day, unfortunately Viet was late to the men’s event, where he was expecting to be a strong chance, and had to withdraw, however he was allowed to play the Under 21 event instead. In the semi-final, he came up against Ahmed Hassan (Yousef’s older brother), and Ahmed claimed a hard-fought victory against Viet in a very entertaining match (-13, 9, -2, 7 , 7). Ahmed then had another great win in the finals match against Jashan Antal, (7, -9, 7, -7, 10), perhaps the 2 best matches of the tournament.”
“The men’s open event was won by Sajith Silva against 7th seed Jashan Antal (-8, 7, -6, 11, 5, 8) - the video of the men’s final can be viewed here. Jashan clearly a stronger player than his 1,727 Rating Central, with his rating moving up 105 points to 1,832. Jashan again played Youssef on Sunday, this time in the U21 semi-final match, and it was a much closer match, with Jashan coming from behind to win (8, -10, -9, 8, 8).”
“The women’s open event was an all Dandenong final and won by Connie Psihogios over Parleen Kaur (8, 8, 7, 3). Connie played with a neck problem and had to withdraw from her other junior event.”
“Ellen Walker had a great tournament with an upset win over Zach Anstey (-5, 9, 7, -8, 8), as well as other solid wins against Parleen Kaur (8, -4, 6, -5, 4) and Nathan Shi (13, -5, -9, 8, 7), and as a result, her Rating Central ranking increased 70 points to 1,602”.
“The Dandenong veterans’ event will be held in two weeks’ time on Sunday 13 July.”
