Psihogios has one of the upsets of the decade at the Croydon Masters Open!

Over the long weekend the 2023 Croydon Masters Open Veterans, Juniors and Seniors tournament took place at the Kilsyth International Table Tennis Stadium with some high-quality Table Tennis played across the three days.
With one of the upsets of the decade, Connie Psihogios defeated 6-time Olympian Jian Fang Lay in the Women’s Single’s Semi-Final.
Psihogios was dominant, winning four sets to nothing, propelling herself to the final where she went down to eventual winner Qian Yang.
It was an incredible achievement for the 14-year-old to defeat Fang Lay.
Psiohogios also took home the Under 19’s Girl’s Singles title.
Sanish Ambekar took out the Men's Single Title, continuing on his form from the Geelong Open with Alex Huang and Yi-Jen Hsu taking out the Under 21 Men's and Women's single titles.
Rising star Lucas Lum had an enjoyable day, winning three titles in the Under 17's Boy's Singles, Under 19's Boy’s Singles and Under 19’s Mixed Doubles, continuing his impressive start to 2023.
Across some of the other Junior categories, Cherry Le defeated Inaaya Khan in the Under 17's Girl’s Singles final, Taleisha Gaeta took home the 15's Girl's Singles titles with Maggie Lyu winning the Under 11 Girl’s Singles.
With another upset in the Veterans, up-and-comer Sam Palmer defeated Warrnambool’s Simon Johnson in the Over 30’s while also taking home the Over 30’s Men’s Doubles title and was runner up in the Division 1 Singles.
Christina Xiong (Sunshine) had a great day with victories in the O/40 and O/50 Women’s Singles, as did Geelong’s Debbie Wilson winning the O/60’s Women’s Doubles, O/60 Single’s and Over 60’s Mixed Doubles. Rod Carlyle also had an enjoyable day, winning the Over 60 Men’s Singles, Over 60’s Men’s Doubles and Over 60’s Mixed Doubles.
“It was great to see the tournament back to pre-covid numbers, especially in the veterans”, said Chair of the State Tournaments Committee, Claire Montgomery.
“Each tournament for the last 8 months in the juniors has been bigger than the last and it was fantastic to see so many numbers in the juniors competing”.
“There was some really strong play in the seniors and seeing Connie Psihogios, a 14-year-old have a fantastic run to the Women’s Final was the highlight of the weekend”.
“I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the next tournament in Ballarat”.
The next tournament on the calendar is the 2023 Ballarat Open happening on March 25-26.
