Sanish Ambekar and Jiayi Zhou Win the Open Titles at the Biggest Vic Closed Championships in Over 10 Years!

The 2022 S-Trend Sportswear Victorian Closed Junior and Senior/Para Championships wrapped up over the weekend with 20 new singles state champions crowned across the two-day event at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC). It was the largest number of entries in over decade with more than 230 players battling it out across the two days. It was fantastic to see such a brilliant turn out from the Victorian table tennis community, especially the huge number of juniors.
“Wow what an excellent Vic Closed Championships,” Said TTV ECO Claire Montgomery, who was shocked to be leaving a two-day tournament with big entry numbers on time on Sunday night.
“The numbers were huge this year, it’s bigger than any of the Vic Closed weekends I can remember in the last 10 or 15 years, the players, umpires and tournament organisers did a fantastic job on both days which helped the tournament run smoothly.” She added.
Jiayi Zhou continued her great tournament form winning the Open Women’s Singles title. Following her 2-0 effort in the group stage she went on to beat Ellen Walker and Yi Zhen Jane Yan only dropping a single set along the way, she also earned herself the U/21 Women’s Singles title to add to her haul from the weekend. In the Open Men’s, Sanish Ambekar claimed another state title, taking down Sajith Silva in the final after beating Yau Chung Low and Bradley Paton in his previous bracket matches. Sanish also added the Open Men’s Doubles title alongside Yugandhe Zende.
Samuel Rizkalla went undefeated through is campaign to earn himself the Para Singles state title with Evgeny John Savinov and Mark Nimmervoll finishing behind him. Leon Suy won the Twenties single title whilst Rocky Chen took home the U/21 Men’s Championship.
Harsh Madaan and Vivienne Halocha round out the senior and para singles results with victories in the O/30 Men’s and Women’s Singles respectively.
On Saturday there were Victorian juniors everywhere as they went head-to-head for the latest state titles on offer. Charlie Mak started us off with his win in the U/9’s Boy’s Singles against Matthew Ho. With the U/9 Girl’s Singles Lydia Tran won both of her group matches before beating Alice Zheng in the final.
Samyukt Vinodhkumar won the U/11 Boy’s Singles title defeating Ollie Xia in the final match whilst Kavyaa Madaan came out on top of her 3-2 match with Angie Jingtian Li in the U/11 Girl’s event.
In the U/13 Boy’s Singles final Thejashvin Vinodhkumar couldn’t let his brother be the only one travelling home with a title, putting in straight sets win in the final against Aiden Tang. Coral Zhao also won in straight sets, defeating Serena Zhang 3-0 in the U/13 Girl’s Singles decider.
In a big 18 group U/15 Boy’s Singles field, Daniel Noura beat Aviraj Singh 3-1 in the final to claim the title after going undefeated in his group. Yu Lily Li came back from an opening set loss to win the U/15 Girl’s Singles ahead of top seed Esme Ho.
Lucas Lum and Yousef Hassan battled it out in the final of the U/17 Boy’s Singles event with Lum winning the title after a 3-1 performance. Lum also took home the U/19 Boy’s Singles championship after defeating Justin Kwan 3-0.
Inaaya Khan and Victoria Zhang put on a fabulous show in the final of the U/17 Girl’s Singles with Khan winning the last two games of the match to take the victory, she also doubled up with a win in the U/19 Girl’s Singles ahead of Gabby Osvath.
