2024 Victorian Metropolitan Championships Preview

Published Thu 06 Jun 2024

The 2024 Victorian Metropolitan Table Tennis Championships is shaping up to be a great King’s Birthday weekend of table tennis and will be the biggest in its 51-year history.

Being held across two venues, Croydon and Districts Table Tennis Association in Kilsyth and the Greater Dandenong Table Tennis Association, 108 teams will compete on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June. The individual component will take place on Monday June 10th.

The Metropolitan Championships first commenced back in 1952, when Table Tennis Victoria (previously the Victorian Table Tennis Association) decided to split the inter-zone final into two separate events, thus a Country Championships and a Metropolitan Championships were born.

The all-time team entry record for the Metro Championships was last year, with 84 teams entered. Those numbers have been smashed this year with 108 teams entered.

There will be teams from Croydon, Coburg, Dandenong, Sunshine, Miao’s TTA, Diamond Valley, Loops and more entered in the three-day event with teams spread out over 27 grades. Players will also play in an Individual Tournament.

The team format will be the same as last year, with "C" Grade and below not having any doubles matches, meaning each singles player will play 3 singles matches each per team match. These changes have been made to ensure that team matches do not finish too late. "A" and "B" Grade will have the same format as 2023.

Metro Championships Tournament Director and Table Tennis Victoria (TTV) Board Member Greg Bristowe is keen to see the tables at his home centre buzzing with action once again.

This year our goal was to reach 100 teams, and we exceeded with 108 teams” said Bristowe.

This meant that we need to also use the Dandenong venue for more teams matches to be played at, and we are grateful that Greater Dandenong were able to accommodate the event.

This year we have over 350 players, 11 Affiliates entered, including new Affiliates to the Metro Championships with the inclusion of Scorpio TTA and the Distruptor affiliates. Also, we are pleased to see the return of Diamond Valley, who has not played for several years."

"We recommend for those playing at the Kilsyth Stadium, to ensure you arrive early, as there is also a major basketball competition being conducted and car parking spots will be hard to find. The basketball kiosk will be open so there will be options in there for food."

Table Tennis Victoria CEO Andrew Weiss echoes Bristowe’s excitement about the growth of the Metro Championships.

I'm thrilled to see the Victorian Metropolitan Table Tennis Championships grow so significantly! It's fantastic to witness our community coming together, with incredible talent and passion for the sport on full display. Our athletes, coaches, and volunteers are doing an amazing job.” said Weiss.
