Team Victoria Shines at the 2024 Australia National Table Tennis Championships

The 2024 Australia National Table Tennis Championships, held in Mandurah from July 7-14, were a resounding success showcasing the best of the sport and highlighting the exceptional talent within Table Tennis Victoria (TTV). 

Over the course of the week, spectators were treated to thrilling matches as athletes from across the nation competed for top honours. The event saw an impressive turnout, with hundreds of participants and fans flocking to the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, creating an electric atmosphere that underscored the sport's growing popularity in Australia. 

Victorian players were particularly dominant throughout the tournament, demonstrating exceptional skill and sportsmanship. The standout performance came from Dillon Chambers, who clinched the Men's Singles title after a series of hard-fought matches including a victory in the final over Finn Luu. In the Women's Singles, Yangzi Liu emerged victorious, defeating Connie Psihogios to claim the title. 

The doubles events also saw Victorian pairs excel. The Men's Doubles title was claimed by the dynamic duo of Dillon Chambers & Xavier Dixon, while the Women's Doubles saw the team of Yangzi Liu & Melissa Tapper secure a well-deserved win. The Mixed Doubles event featured a thrilling final where Finn Luu & Yangzi Liu showcased their remarkable talent, ultimately taking home the victory.  

Overall, across both Combined Able/Para events Team Victoria won 42 Gold medals, 33 Silver, and 38 Bronze medals. An absolutely incredible feat that all team members contributed to!

The level of competition was outstanding, and it was fantastic to witness just how talented and successful our athletes are. This event has truly highlighted the strength and depth of table tennis in Australia. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in making this tournament such a success, from the organisers to the volunteers and, of course, the athletes." 

Oscar Yam, ECO of Table Tennis Victoria was incredibly pleased to be at the event stating, “It was an incredible experience to support Team VIC alongside Andrew in Mandurah. The venue was fantastic, and the competition was intense and exhilarating. David, Frank, and Mick demonstrated outstanding leadership in guiding the Teams, while the Junior Coaches put in tireless efforts with the Junior, Senior, and Para teams. The dedication and hard work of everyone involved are reflected in the impressive results and the remarkable number of medals we achieved. Well done to Table Tennis Australia for the excellent event and I look forward to the next one!” 

Both Andrew and Oscar were also delighted to be able to attend the Australian Paralympic Team announcement with Oscar adding “It was equally wonderful to celebrate the selection of Para Table Tennis Team for the upcoming Paralympics, particularly given that more than half of the team members are Victorians.”

As the 2024 championships draw to a close, the focus now shifts to the future. The success of the Nationals has set a high standard for future tournaments, with plans already underway to build on this momentum. The continued support and development of athletes, coaches, and infrastructure will be crucial in maintaining and enhancing the sport's profile both in Victoria and across the country.
