Ma Lin Goes Back-to-Back in Ballarat While Hannah Green Wins the Open Women’s Championship!

Published Thu 07 Apr 2022

The 2022 Ballarat Junior and Senior Open Championships took place over the weekend with the Ballarat Table Tennis Association putting on a fantastic tournament. Dandenong’s Ma Lin claimed the Open Men’s Singles while HWATT’s Hannah Green won the Open Women’s.

Lin made short work of the group stage finishing undefeated without dropping a set across his three matches. On his way to the title, he took out Croydon’s Harsh Madaan in a five-set match before defeating Geelong’s Richard Li and Croydon’s Sajith Silva in straight sets to take home his first state circuit win of the year and defend his 2021 Ballarat victory.

Following a tough five-set battle in her opening match of the group stage, Hannah Green won her next two in straight sets to head into the final bracket undefeated. It was a family affair in the first match as she defeated her sister Olivia over six sets before going on to beat Croydon’s Victoria Zhang in the final to take the victory.

However, Zhang didn’t head home empty-handed after defeating last year’s Ballarat Open winner Ellen Walker (Dandenong) to win the U/21 Women’s Singles. Richard Li took out Coburg’s Dib Hassan in straight sets to take the U/21 Men’s title.

Ballarat’s Rory Carroll won the Para Singles title with a 3-0 record while Tarneit's Shibaji Datta and Ballarat’s Emma Wang won the O/30 Singles.

TTV’s new CEO Gen Dohrmann made the trip up to Ballarat on Sunday to attend her first table tennis tournament and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“It was great to be able to visit the Ballarat Open on Sunday and see some of our Victorian Senior and Para players in action,” she said.

“The Ballarat Table Tennis Association did a great job hosting the event and I loved meeting some of the committee members and talking about how we can increase the profile of table tennis in Ballarat. Well done to all the Junior players who competed on Saturday as well as all of the Senior and Para players who competed on Sunday.”

In the Junior Open, Croydon and HWATT’s juniors came away with the most bragging rights after a fantastic display by all of the juniors involved in the tournament.

HWATT’s Hasali Sanaya Buddhadasa won the U/19 and U/17 Girl’s Singles. Croydon’s Lucas Lum defeated HWATT’s Daniel Noura for the U/19 Boy’s title. With Noura getting through a huge field in the U/17 Boy’s singles to add another win to his U/15 Boy’s victory.

Croydon’s Serena Zhang beat fellow Croydon junior Alice Xia in four sets to win the U/13 Girl’s Singles while also winning the U/15 Girl’s title. Xia did manage to take home the U/11 Girl’s title. Navik Rathnasinghe (Dandenong) claimed the U/13 Boy’s category while Croydon’s Joshua Ding came out on top in a five-set final in the U/11 Boy’s Singles.
