Published Mon 17 Feb 2020

The 2020 Victorian Closed Veteran Championships were held at MSAC on Sunday February 16. Gold medals were handed out across 40 categories as 111 players competed over a total of 407 matches in an action-packed day of table tennis.

TTV would like to congratulate and say thank you to everyone that competed, won and came along to watch. With 40 state titles on the line there were a number of feel-good stories and brilliant results.

In the Men’s Over 50 and Over 60 Singles categories Brian Berry and Phu Be Huynh traded medals with Berry taking out the Over 50’s title in a three-set final. Huynh then dished out some revenge defeating Berry in the Over 60’s final over four sets.

One of the best Over 40 players in the world, Simon Johnson, dropped just one set on his way to claiming the Over 40’s title, defeating second seed Adam Zheng Fu in four sets.

A pair of maiden state titles from Samantha Hooker (O30WS) and Jan Taylor (O70WS) were two of the highlights of the day. Hooker went in as the third seed and won two five set thrillers against second seed Belinda Strong and top seed Vivienne Halocha to claim the Over 30s Women’s Singles State Championship. Taylor defeated Penelope Unthank in three sets to win the Over 70’s Women’s Singles title.
