2020 Victorian Closed Senior & Para Championships

The 2020 Victorian Closed Senior and Para Championships were held at MSAC on Sunday 2nd February as some of the State’s top players battled it out across 19 events in an action-packed day of table tennis.
A few feel-good stories came out of the weekend including Chermaine Quah’s excellent silver medal in the Women’s Open Singles as well as a gold in the Under 21 Women’s Singles event. Quah made it through the group stage with a pair four set victories before taking out the second seed Li Na Lei in a five-set semi-final.
Quah was eventually defeated by top seed Qian Yang over four sets in the final, Yang cruised through the field without dropping a set on her way to an impressive first place. Yang ended the day with three gold medals after also winning the Women’s and Mixed Open Doubles with Li Na Lei and Lin Ma.
Lin Ma’s doubles gold was his second of the day after defeating Dillon Chambers in the Men’s Open Singles following a hard fought seven set match.
In the Under 21 Men’s Singles, Matthew Avers claimed the gold in four sets against the number one seed Richard Li. Avers went home with an excellent haul as he took gold in the Division 2 Singles, Men’s Open Doubles and Division 2 Doubles.
It was also a good turnout for the Para competitors with 11 athletes entering the tournament. Daniela Di Toro was the big winner with great performances in the Class 1-5 singles and the Para Doubles heading home with a pair of gold medals.
All in all, in was an excellent event to kick off an exciting year of tournaments at MSAC in 2020. With the Albert Park Open Junior Championships and Victorian Closed Veterans Championships set to take place at MSAC on the 15th and 16th of February.
