Published Mon 17 Feb 2020

The 2020 Albert Park Junior Open took place on Saturday February 15 at MSAC with 70 juniors competing across five age categories.

Some highlights from the tournament included Ellen Walker’s fantastic performance in the Girl’s Under 18 Singles, Walker entered as the number two seed and finished the event without a loss. Top seed Chermaine Quah finished second.

Surprise newcomer Cherry Le defeated top seed Inaaya Khan in three sets to win the Under 15’s Girl’s Singles, Le also beat Khan in the Under 13’s Girl’s Singles event.

For the boys, number two seed Justin Kwan took out the Under 13’s Boy’s Singles against Lucas Lum, defeating the number one seed in four sets.

All in all, it was an excellent tournament that displayed some of the great junior talent coming up in table tennis for Victoria.

“It was a fantastic field of players competing here at MSAC today. Tracy Gardner (fellow junior team manager) and I were pleasantly surprised at the sheer number of new players starting out this year and their talent. It bodes well for the Victorian Junior Team selection later in the year.” said TTV Events and Clubs Officer, Claire Montgomery.

TTV would also like to thank the Albert Park volunteers for putting holding a great event on our behalf. Well done to Kameron Chan, a first time Tournament Director, he was put through his paces after being the guinea pig for the new Tournament Directors Course that is being developed as part of the EPIC.TT Club Development Initiative funded by SRV.
