2019 Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival
Published Tue 10 Sep 2019
The 2019 Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (also known as the Mooncake Festival) kicked off in Chinatown on the 31st August, and runs until the 28th September.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is the second most important festival in China after Chinese New Year. Ancient Chinese emperors worshipped the Autumn moon to thank it for the harvest. The festival traditionally celebrates the end of the autumn harvest, and represents relief from the hard work associated with the crop collection.
With table tennis widely acknowledged as the most popular sport in China, TTV saw an exciting opportunity to connect with the Chinese community through a pop up activation on Saturday 7th September.
Two tables were set up in the middle of Chinatown, staffed by TTV coach John Ind, who encouraged festival-goers to come and have a hit.
Despite the wet weather, the activation attracted over 300 people of all ages throughout the day, and into the evening.
TTV thanks the Chinatown Precinct Association for the opportunity, and looks forward to its on-going involvement.
